About me

Be prepared: "Luck" is truly where preparation meets opportunity. ~ Professor Randy Pausch

Look at the world differently. In a world of talkers, be a thinker and a doer. ~ Destin Sandlin

Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted. And experience is often the most valuable thing you have to offer. ~ Professor Randy Pausch

My name is Anderson Banihirwe.

I am a computational scientist with strong interest in High Performance Computing (HPC).

Currently, I am an intern at Quansight. I am very thrilled to be working with the team at Quansight to further the Quansight mission of sustainable open source software! At Quansight, I am working on:

  • xnd: a library for refactoring of NumPy capabilities to low-level libraries and high-level interfaces.

  • GPU dataframes support: specifically integrating pygdf (a Python interface to access and manipulate the GPU DataFrame) with Apache Arrow library.

Previously (Dec 2017 - May 2018), I was a Data Scientist intern @First Orion. Prior joining First Orion (Summer 2017), I was a research intern in Computational & Information Systems Lab (CISL) at National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in the Application Scalability and Performance (ASAP) Group, where I work on PySpark for "Big" Atmospheric & Oceanic Data Analysis. At NCAR, I wrote spark-xarray, a python package that integrates PySpark and xarray for Climate Data Analysis.

I graduated from University of Arkansas at Little Rock with a B.S in Systems Engineering with a focus on Computer Systems.

I contribute to and maintain several libraries within Python’s numeric computing ecosystem, particularly around data mining and machine learning.

My long-term goal is to continue to learn and improve my skills and knowledge. In addition, I aspire to be part of an amazing team creating world changing products sharing my technical and collaborative skills while discovering how engineering and science are applied to problem-solving in our rapidly changing high-tech world.
